Ableton 11.3 - FrequencyTrainer 1.0
About - This is a free and simple to use frequency trainer which can serve as a ear primer for mixing and mastering sessions. This rack uses a free noise generator by Melda Productions, Serum or Vital as a noise generator. There are two versions of each. EQ8 which uses the stock Ableton EQ (Not preferred because of the bell's roll-off at higher frequencies) and the ProQ3 version (Preferred method simply because of the more accurate response it has in the 20Khz range).
Best used when blind testing with a friend! Try it out or check out the frequency test video on my YouTube channel!
Ear Trainer VideosWhy use it - This tool is designed to help your ears get calibrate to frequencies across the spectrum. This helps engineers get their ears ready for sessions or train their ears to become more aware of certain frequencies and how they sound relative to a noise floor.
How to use - The device features fourteen macros which control two audio chains. Each macro is labeled and is fairly straight forward.
"Boost or Cut" macro toggles between boosting frequencies or cutting frequencies (Toggles at 64/65).
"Device On" macro turns on MNoiseGenerator when the macro passes 0.
"Volume" controls the overall volume with the dB showing approximate true peaks (due to the nature of MNoise there will be occasional true peaks above the shown value).
"Hz" macros toggle on and off the relative band peaks of both audio channels.
"Q" changes the band width of every band.
"Limiter" toggles on a compressor that prevents the difference in volume straining the ears or adding bias to your ears. Particularly good when using multiple frequency boosts or training your ears to hear dynamics. "Volume" macro won't affect the compressor. Didn't use Ableton Limiter because it has a knee that isn't adjustable.
"HMU on Twitter" Hmu on Twitter for suggestions or just a shout out on how this device might have helped you.
When you load up the device there will be a momentary noise signal! Mute/turn off the channel you're loading it on to prevent unwanted noise when loading the device!
Last but not least don't forget to drink plenty of water, stretch every hour, and work out your calves weekly. Happy producing!
